WELCOME to LOWESTOFT, and let's START with NAVAL MEMORIAL

WELCOME to LOWESTOFT, a charming coastal town in England, known for its rich maritime history and breathtaking beaches. Let's START with NAVAL MEMORIAL, a poignant tribute overlooking the vast blue sea, honouring the brave souls who sailed the waters with courage and determination.

I plan to explore numerous destinations such as the Naval Memorial in Lowestoft to gather engaging content for my channel. If you haven't already, please consider subscribing to my channel to stay updated with my latest blogs, videos, and pictures. Thank you for your support!

According to historical records found in the Doomsday Book, Lowestoft is listed as 'Lothu Wistoft', portraying a quaint agricultural village inhabited by only 20 families long ago. The manor of this charming town was once owned by 'Huge de Montfort', adding a touch of aristocracy to its humble beginnings. Situated on the English North Sea Coast in Suffolk, Lowestoft holds the title of being the most easterly settlement in the UK, boasting its proximity to major cities like London, Ipswich, and Norwich. Its picturesque location on the edge of Broad enhances the town's natural beauty, making it a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

As the primary town in the district of East Suffolk, it boasted an estimated population of 73,775 residents in 2018. Serving as a port town, it evolved from its roots in the Fishing Industry to become a popular Seaside Resort known for its expansive, sandy beaches. The town's growth was further spurred in the 1960s by the emergence of Oil and Gas Exploitation in the southern region, in conjunction with the nearby town of Great Yarmouth. While these industries have experienced declines, the town is now positioning itself as a key hub in the Renewable Energy sector, marking a new chapter in its development.

There are many other valuable pieces of information that I have gathered from CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission). The link is provided below, and I will be sharing a detailed analysis on my blog soon, so remember to keep a lookout for that.

LOCATION INFORMATION: The naval memorial is situated majestically to the North of the charming town, nestled alongside the old A12, now known as A47, Yarmouth Road, approximately One (1) mile North of the bustling Harbour. Its tranquil surroundings offer a peaceful setting for visitors to pay their respects and admire the rich history it represents.

The memorial stands proudly in a prime location, situated within the picturesque Belle Vue Park maintained by the local authority. Perched atop the cliffs, it offers a breathtaking sight of the Foreshore and Sea, its position on the cliff's edge ensuring an uninterrupted view. Dedicated to the memory of nearly 2,400 men of the Royal Naval Patrol Services laid to rest in the sea, the monument features a majestic fluted column emerging from a spacious 12-meter circular base topped with a symbolic bronze ship device named LYMPHOID, towering over 15 meters above ground level. Bronze Panels encircling the base display the honored names, elegantly recessed and shielded from the elements by a protective cornice. At the forefront, a distinguished Portland Stone panel flanked by naval crowns adorned with wreaths and foul anchors gazes out towards the vast sea, embodying a sense of reverence and remembrance.

VISITING INFORMATION: If you are planning to visit, please note that car parking in the area is restricted. For your convenience, it is advisable to park in North Parade and then make your way to "Belle Vue Park" by crossing the Footbridge. Your cooperation in following these instructions will be helpful for you and the people nearby.

A copy of the memorial register is preserved at the Royal Patrol Service Museum, conveniently situated not far from the memorial site. Additionally, another duplicate of the memorial is safeguarded at the Town Hall Reception for public viewing during standard office hours: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, from Monday to Friday (Closed on Bank Holidays).
